Happy International Women's Day! Btw, I haven't read Hidden Figures yet but I've watched the movie several times. It's a ritual for me to watch this movie at least once every year. I've already re-watched it in January and will probably do so before the end of the year. It's a story that motivates the hell out of me.

What's a book that has a female character that really inspired you or got your attention in a particular way? Are you doing anything special on Women's Day?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. What a ride! This story spans five generations, from the youngest Greenwood (2034), who has no clue about her family history, all the way back to the patriarchs (1908), with the Greenwoods in between. It’s a sweeping tale of family, legacy, trauma, greed, nature vs. nurture, and the devastating impact of human exploitation on the environment—all tied together by the ever-present trees. The book kicks off in 2034, where the world’s forests have been ravaged by fungal infections. But there’s one last old-growth forest left—on a remote island in British Columbia—where people now pay a ridiculous amount of money just to visit. Jacinda Greenwood is one of the guides there, and when her ex shows up as a tourist, he drops a bomb: she might be part of the famous Greenwood family. From there, the story winds back through time, unraveling the Greenwoods' tangled past.

What I ♥️
🌳 The stunning metaphors and comparisons between people, life, and trees. It’s wild how interconnected we are with nature. While reading Greenwood, I kept thinking about The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben—turns out, Michael Christie was actually inspired by that book! I felt so validated. 😆
🌳 Everett Greenwood—easily my favorite character. Rough on the outside, but pure heart underneath. The way he risked everything to save a baby? My heart!
🌳 The power of community. No spoilers, but the Kingston community played a huge role in Everett and Harry Greenwood’s lives (1908). Even when they were tough to handle, people still guided and nurtured them in their own way.
🌳 The writing. I learned so much about trees, and somehow, it never felt boring. Usually, I’m not a fan of too much description, but here, it painted such vivid, atmospheric settings. And the fact that it's set in Canada? Love that for me.

What I 💔
🍂 I struggled to connect with Willow Greenwood (1974). Some of her life choices had me confused, but I suspect they were rooted in trauma.

🍂 I wanted more of Jacinda Greenwood (2034)! How did she grow up? How did she not know anything about her dad’s side of the family? So many questions!

3 books last month! At least I met my monthly goal. I'll go through a big change in March: going back to work (was on mat leave) with 2 little ones at daycare. It takes time for me to get used to a change in my routine so I don't know if I'll keep the same reading pace. Let's see😊

I usually like James Patterson's books but this one felt short for me. I mean, it's James Patterson! I was expecting more!
The super star quarterback of Philadelphia's football team is found murdered in his car the day of the Super Bowl! Suspect #1: the wife, Francine. Her legal team hires PI Cooper Lamb and the District Attorney hires Veena Lion, also a PI, to investigate. Both know each other very well if you know what I mean 😏😏. So they end up relying on each other, sharing info and protecting each other to find the truth about the murder.

What I ♥️:
- The twist towards the end was good.

What I 💔:
- The written-style. A lot of conversation transcripts!! Like seriously!! I couldn't "feel" the moments, or the tension in conversations, or "hear" the thoughts of the protagonists involved in the dialogs (do you know what I mean?). It didn't work for me.
- The humour fell flat too, or childish. A lot of eyes-rolling from me.
- The way the investigation was led (as if I'm an expert🤣). You know how investigators make deductions based on evidence? Or find a way to make people tell the truth? In this book, I found that suspects easily gave out information, or the information was gotten through hacking. Come on! I didn't feel invested in the whole process😂. I don't know if I'm making sense but with thrillers, I like to put all the pieces back together along with the detective or whoever is trying to find the murder.

That is if the book club pick is solely up to you (who wouldn't want that😁?). There are so many books I can think of but I'll choose Rootless by Krystle Zara Appiah, just because I think it could spark great discussions due to the variety of themes explored by the author.

🥺😢😞 I am at page 70 and I can't keep on reading. I think I need to pause. Don't get me wrong, it's extremely well written but I didn't think it was going to be so hard to read this story. It got me so emotional and I'm not even through half of the book yet! To believe that this "reforming" school actually existed! These boys...And I'm sure I'm not even close to the horror of what is to come in the book. No, I will pause for now. I can't. I'll surely get back to it but for now...uh-uh. I just can't.

By the way, do you now the song on this post? Strange Fruits by Billie Holiday? My mind kept going to this song while reading the book. Sure lynching is not the plot of this book but still, isn't it close to it, though?

🤔 The Vegetarian by Han Kang. But I didn't understand the deeper meaning, nor the hidden message though😂. I'm sorry to say I DNF'd that book mostly because I wasn't getting the author's point. I stopped my reading at Part 2 and promised myself to come back to it later. Maybe my brain was not yet ready to interpret the book😂.
